The CBAP Certification Process

Apply for CBAP CertificationThe Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) designation is awarded to business analysis practitioners with at least five years of experience who have successfully demonstrated their understanding and expertise in the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK®).

Use the most current version of the  Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK®)  Guide as a resource when completing your application and for full details on applying for CBAP® Certification, please review the following information:


To be eligible for CBAP Certification, you must:

1. Meet the following 5 requirements:

  • Sufficient Work Experience
    You must have demonstrated a minimum 7,500 hours (i.e., five (5) years) of business analysis work experience in the last ten (10) years engaged in tasks specifically aligned with the BABOK®. The ten (10) year timeframe is based on the application submitted date.
  • Expertise in the BABOK® Guide Knowledge Areas
    You must have demonstrated experience and expertise (i.e., a minimum of 900 hours (i.e., 6 months) of business analysis work experience engaged in tasks specifically related to the knowledge areas as defined within the BABOK® in at least 4 of the 6 knowledge areas.
  • Minimum Education
    You must meet the minimum education requirement of high school or equivalent. Note: there will be no reduction in work experience for post secondary education.
  • Adequate Professional Development Hours
    You must have 21 hours of professional development within the last 4 years. The professional development content must be aligned with the BABOK® Guide and must be completed by the application submitted date.
  • Evidence of Certification Suitability
    You must have two references to indicate that you are a suitable candidate for the CBAP® certification. The two references can be a career manager, an internal or external client or a CBAP® recipient.

2. Complete and submit the CBAP® Application Form.

3. If your application is approved, you are eligible to write the CBAP® exam at this time. NOTE - You have a maximum of one (1) year from the date of your application approval and exam eligibility email to successfully pass the exam. It is your responsibility to ensure the application does not lapse.

4. If your application is not approved, you are not eligible to write the CBAP® exam at this time. Your application assessment results email will include the reason your application was not approved. Your exam fee, if you submitted it with your application package, will be returned to you. You may reapply for CBAP® certification after three (3) months and after you have remedied the reasons for your application being declined.

5. The final step in the Certification process is to write and pass a comprehensive examination, based on the IIBA® Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK®) that is designed to objectively assess and measure your business analysis knowledge and experience.

6. If you pass the exam, you are granted Certification and you may use the designation of “Certified Business Analysis Professional™ (CBAP®)”.

7. If you do not pass the exam, you are allowed to retake the exam once within the one-year period from the date of your application approval and exam eligibility letter. However, you must wait three (3) months from the date of your last exam before retaking the exam. To take the CBAP® exam again, please complete the CBAP® Exam Re-Write Registration Form.
